Personal, Social, Health and Relationships Education (PSHRE)
At Old Trafford Community Academy our PSHE curriculum is designed to equip children with relevant and meaningful content, which is supported through a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health. With an ever changing society, we are able to provide our children with a strong understanding of the diverse world around them and support them in playing a positive role in contributing to the school and the wider community. Weaving through the heart of our PSHE teaching, is a commitment to embedding our school values and key concepts which are, optimism, friendship, responsibility, resilience, trustworthiness and community. In all year groups, our PSHE is supported through a range of texts, with each unit being presented as a question. Children are encouraged to ask and answer questions relating to the stories and further develop their knowledge and skills of how to stay happy, healthy and safe. Within our school we have a focus on developing Oracy skills in each and every subject, Oracy lends itself well to PSHE as there is a large amount of discussion where children can build on others’ views or challenge an opinion or statement. There is emphasis on PSHE also known as Personal, Social and Emotional Development in the EYFS and so although there will be targeted teaching, PSHE is embedded in everything that the children do. When walking through our school you will experience how PSHE impacts the lives of our children and helps them to become understanding, supportive and accepting individuals. This is achieved through the support of every member of staff being good role models and having high expectations. Our curriculum is designed to help them to understand how they are developing personally and socially, and incorporates many issues that are part of growing up. As part of our core offer at OTCA we support our families to guide their children down the right path through the support of our extended services. Our parents are provided with a digital library, showcasing the stories that are covered across the year. From Year 1 to Year 6 PSHE is taught on a weekly basis and as a school we follow the Talking Points PSHE scheme. As well as our school-based teaching, we welcome guests into school to support the threads we cover in our PSHE curriculum. For example, the fire brigade visit year two and six each autumn and summer; the NSPCC visit school to run workshops for all children every two years; Trafford Housing Trust run anti-bullying workshops for various year groups. Below you will find the teaching map from EYFS to Year 6, which outlines the topics we are covering and the questions that will be asked to the children during each topic.
