Music

Music and art are used as enhancers to help us deliver the knowledge and content of our curriculum. For example, when year two learn about islands in geography, they use music knowledge and skills to enhance and deepen their understanding. Although the arts are used as enhancers to provide a rich and engaging learning experience for children, there is knowledge and skills associated with each subject and progression within these subjects is important.

Our aim is to develop the children’s knowledge, skills and understanding of the arts. We ensure that the act of investigating and making something includes exploring and developing ideas, and evaluating and developing work. Teachers draw attention to good examples of individual performance or work as models for the other children. They encourage children to evaluate their own ideas and methods, and the work of others, and to say what they think and feel about them. We give children the opportunity to work, by themselves and in collaboration with others, on projects in two and three dimensions, and at different scales. Children also have the opportunity to use a wide range of materials and resources.

Our arts curriculum aims to encourage children to express themselves through a variety of media. It gives them the chance to develop important oracy skills by evaluating their own work, and that of other great musicians and artists. We aim to foster a love of the arts and offer our children extracurricular experiences, such as art clubs, choirs and singing assemblies. Singing assemblies provide children with the opportunity to sing as part of a larger group and hone their skills.

We celebrate the wide range of demographic backgrounds and cultures that our children bring to school. We incorporate these into lessons, for example discussing traditional art from India during Holi or appreciating the music that has developed in Manchester.

As part of our music offer, we work with the Trafford Music Service who teach music lessons to a specified year group. As part of our music offer, we work with the Trafford Music Service, who teach music lessons to each year group from year 1 to year 6. The music service also supports our school choirs.

Our music teaching addresses the following threads:

  • Listening
  • Singing
  • Composing
  • Performing (and evaluating) with and without instruments
